Advice From Allies

  • First study up on the topic that he/she has survived  
  • Next learn the trigger points that may spark some emotions or memories or behaviors and either avoid those triggers or help them move through them one at a time.
  • Be patient
  • Be loving
  • Remember there is a whole person in there waiting for you to help bring them out or back with love and understanding.
  • Help with their recovery when possible.
  • Provide a safe place for them when you are together.
  • Be gentle with words and actions.
  • Support them when they get crazy and do not make the episode about you, because its not about you.
  • Touch therapy.
  • Don’t judge them.  
  • If they hate the perpetrator, then you hate them too.  If they forgive them, then you forgive them too.  In other words, you are ALWAYS on their side.  
  • Lots of love
  • Lots of encouragement
  • Help them to see the light on the path to recovery.
  • Know that recovery is a life long journey, not a singular destination. If you can’t travel the path with them, then get out of their way.  
  • Learn how to bring out the best in your partner, not the worst.  
  • Learn to have an abundance of patience.
